Moving into Kindergarten or first grade is a big deal, not only for the child but also for the parent. Your child has started a new class at school and now at church. Our teachers are very aware of this time of tranistion in your child’s life. They will help you and your child through any transitional anxieties that may be experienced.
This age group is looking to understand and explore the world in a broader way. For this reason, we provide them with a number of ways to learn about God and His kingdom. The service includes seven main elements which are specifically designed for this age group. During class time the two grades are seperated, however they come together during their time in the service room. A general overview of a typical service for your child is noted below.
The following occurs in each individual kindergarten and 1st grade classroom:
Memory Verse
By memorizing scripture, your child will ultimately learn to apply the verses to their life. The Bible verses are selected to directly support the month’s theme for the lessons. Your child’s teacher can provide you with a list of the month’s memory verses to take home. (Click here to print this month’s list)
Prayer & Offering
During this time, the children have an opportunity to speak with God. Everyone comes together to bless the offering, to thank God for the things He has given them, and for those in their life such as: parents, family, church, home, and friends.
Bible Lesson
The Bible lesson for the week is taught directly to the children in their specific classroom. They will have the opportunity to ask and answer questions with their teacher and fellow students concerning the lesson. The teacher will use a variety of methods to teach your child, such as: reading from the Bible, the use of pictures and posters, and movie clips (depending on the lesson). In return, your child will not only walk away with more Biblical understanding, they will learn how each lesson applies to them personally.
Craft Time
Repeating the information is still important at this age because it helps children comprehend the Bible lesson. In the classroom, we re-affirm the lesson with an interactive craft that allows the teachers to walk through the lesson, while giving each child a hands-on approach to learn about God. Along with the weekly craft, a description of the story is included so that parents can review and discuss the story with their children at home.
Kindergarten and 1st grade join together in the service room for the following:
Praise & Worship
In the service room, we teach the children why we raise our hands, clap, sing, and dance before the Lord--to praise and worship Him! The children will sing songs and express their love for God with the clapping and lifting of their hands. (Click here to hear an example of the songs)
Creative Illustration
We utilize a wide variety of characters, props, settings, and sound effects in order to creatively teach the Bible lesson. Through this innovative presentation, your child will be able to witness firsthand how that lesson, or principle, applies to them today. The children love the interaction and “live” character performances!
The following occurs in each individual kindergarten and 1st grade classroom:
Group Discussion
What good is information if you do not know how to apply it? That is the premise of our group discussion time. This allows the teacher to review with the children all aspects of what they learned--from the memory verse, to the creative illustration, and ending with how to apply the lesson to their everyday life.
